Making your bed
Surprisingly there are some good reasons to make your bed everyday. High functioning chronic depression will allow you to get out of bed every day whether you really want to or not but making your bed can help set the day to the right tone to keep things on a manageable level.
Admiral William McRaven, the commander of U.S. Special Operations. In a 2014 commencement speech at University of Texas at Austin, Admiral McRaven said:
“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.
By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.”
Stress Levels Come Down
It also helps to reduce stress levels because the room looks cleaner and tidier. I know for sure that if I leave my apartment uncleaned and looking in disarray my mood sinks further and it becomes harder and harder to do things. A good clean a made up bed and things always look brighter.
This cleaner and tidier retreat will now also be able to reduce those stress levels you have somewhere to go that is absolutely yours. I am lucky enough to live alone so my whole apartment is a retreat but if you live with others your room with its bed all neatly made ready to go will help create a safe haven for you to go to, to shut out the world.
And making your bed every morning will help you develop good habits. I once read that if you do something over and over 21 times it becomes a habit. So start at day one and start a new habit a good one. You may find that other good habits might follow do not disappear if they don’t depression is an uneasy bed fellow. But if it does you may want to keep your clothes off the floor and suddenly (suddenly!!), dusting also becomes a part of the new custom. Once you start to realise you can finish these tasks quite quickly and without too much strain you may want to start cleaning up in the kitchen and lounge room, Before you know it, your apartment/room will go on to feel like a wonderful, restful retreat. And that is a big big bonus for anyone with high functioning depression. Trust me I know.
